Secret Artworks: The Gold-bug

Goldbug

Secret Artworks 2104 was a fund raiser for Cincinnati-based ArtWorks.  Artists create a 5×7” work and their identity is hidden until after the work is purchased. Three similar pieces were created for the show. Inspiration was taken from Edgar Allen Poe’s piece The Gold-Bug.  Wanting the piece to have a secret element, his cipher was used to encrypt a riddle for the “winner” of the art to solve. The riddle led them to a special location where they would find a small prize and instructions to contact us for a better prize.

The gold bugs were sculpted virtually. Their bodies are skull-like without being too obvious. They were 3D printed and then gold-leafed and distressed. The riddle was written on handmade leather parchment. Bug and parchment were then mounted on a piece of pickled wood.
